Whitbourn: Son of God Mass
Brahms: Requiem (with piano accompaniment)
Cleveland Philharmonic Choir & Soloists Sam Hird (baritone), Anna Dias (soprano) and Matthew Politz (Clarinet)
Accompanists:
Alison Gill
Andrew Christer
Conductor: John Forsyth MBE
Experience the choir’s first performance at Teesside High School, with its comfortable balcony for audience, giving a good view of the action. It’s an afternoon concert which we feel is more attractive at this time of year.
The Whitbourn piece, lasting just over 20 minutes, may be new to you. It was loved by the audience when it was performed in Durham a few years ago. Composed in 2001, it features an amazing saxophone part (we are using a clarinet, which works well). The instrument soars above the choir, giving an eastern, almost jazzy feel, The choir sings the words of the mass, sensitively set using harmonies which are easy on the ear,
After the interval, when tea and coffee will be served, we perform the Brahms Requiem in the version accompanied by piano, played by the four hands of skilful pianists Alison Gill and Andrew Christer. We will sing in English, words which plead for the peace of the souls of the departed and comfort for those who grieve,

"Thank you for the Music"
Cleveland Philharmonic Choir & Soloists
Accompanist: Andrew Christer
Conductor: John Forsyth MBE
John Forsyth is retiring from his conducting work in 2025, and this is his last summer concert with the choir. It’s going to be a great celebration of pieces we have loved singing with him – and those you have enjoyed, too.
There’s something for everyone in this concert of short pieces, some full of energy, others more peaceful - Byrd and Monteverdi, Elgar and Bruckner. You’ll hear Stanford’s The Bluebird and the joyous My spirit sang all day. We’ll include a selection from The Mikado, with new words promised for the Lord High Executioner’s ‘little list’!
In tribute to John, we will sing music he wrote recently for St George’s Chapel, Windsor, and also his arrangement of Paul McCartney’s Long and Winding Road. Solos include an oboe piece from Daniel Fergie who plays with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, an organ tribute from accompanist Andrew Christer and delightful guitar pieces from John himself.

Comments received following the performance of Bach B Minor Mass in March 2012....
Alex Cunningham MP: Thank you for the kind invitation to attend Saturday evening concert which both Evaline and I enjoyed very much. I had never heard the piece before but warmed to it, like the audience clearly did and will now seek a recording. Please pass on my thanks to John and everyone involved. They all made a wonderful noise in our Parish Church.
About the Mayor of Stockton, Paul Baker, the mayor is a huge fan of CPC and JF. At the end of the first half, the mayor pronounced that he thought he had died and gone to heaven!
Audience member: Your Mass in B Minor at Stockton Parish Church on March 31st, was memorable, many many thanks.
Ben Kerslake, tenor soloist: The service and warmth we received from all sections of the choir was fantastic. Thanks for all your organisation, it all ran smoothly due to the finer details being looked after.
Carolina Krogius (mezzo soloist) I enjoyed the concert very much , it was a lovely experience to perform the B minor mass with you all! I was very thankful for the opportunity to perform this wonderful piece and to come and sing in the UK again! I think the choir and the orchestra did a wonderful job! Anne and her husband took good care of Allan and me, it really was very nice to stay at their place and to get to know them a little bit.
Jane Lomax who fixes the orchestra: All the new orchestra players (mostly Opera North) said how lovely and friendly Cleveland was to play with - sheer delight at the coffee, tea and biscuits! You always do us proud and are a delight to work with, I hope you know that.
David Crookes (Making Music NE) What a splendid concert with which to end my 'official' connection with Cleveland Philharmonic Choir. It was most enjoyable - the sound of the chorus was especially good.
